What is IntraLase?
LASIK has been used on patients to fix vision problems for over 20 years. In that time, there have been many advancements in LASIK technology and techniques. One of the latest advancements in laser vision correction is the IntraLase® method. This method is also known as all-laser LASIK or bladeless LASIK. This is because it uses lasers to make a corneal flap for the LASIK eye surgery instead of a surgical blade. This is a great option because not only does it make LASIK possible for those who weren’t candidates with traditional LASIK procedures, but it also allows more patients to feel comfortable undergoing the surgery. The ophthalmologists at Boston Vision strive to provide their patients with the latest, most effective advancements in laser eye surgery.
How Does IntraLase Work?
With the IntraLase LASIK procedure, there is no need for a manual blade during your LASIK surgery. This uses Femtosecond laser computer technology to create a tiny flap in the cornea. The IntraLase FS laser operates at very high speeds, so, with the help of the computer, it can be controlled and allows the tissues to be targeted and divided at the molecular level without impacting the surrounding tissue. As the laser moves back and forth across the eye, small rows of bubbles just beneath the corneal surface are created. Then, the laser connects the bubbles to form the corneal flap. This process takes about 15 seconds in total. After the LASIK procedure, the flap easily goes back into position and starts to heal. With this technique, the surgeon can tailor-make the flap based on your unique eye shape. This allows for fewer complications and helps patients have a greater chance of achieving 20/20 vision or better.
