Meet Dr. Gendelman

Phillip M. Gendelman, M.D. is board certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology. He is also a member of the Massachusetts Eye Physicians and Surgeon and the Massachusetts Medical Society. Dr. Phillip Gendelman has successfully performed thousands of surgeries, including cataract surgery, lasers for diabetic retinopathy, retinal holes and tears, and glaucoma, as well as numerous lid procedures.

Dr. Phillip Gendelman attended Amherst College where he triple majored in neuroscience, English, and Psychology. He was a member of the Dean’s List from 1971-1974 and received the Woodruff Simpson fellowship for academic excellence. While at Amherst he engaged in medical research in neurosciences and published numerous articles. He graduated from Amherst College magna cum laude and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa and Sigma Xi. He then attended Yale Medical School where he received awards for his research and publications in the neurosciences, neuropharmacology, and neurosurgery. These included the Feris prize and the Sandoz prize, both for excellence in medical research. While at Yale he also received the Fannie August trust scholarship, a competitive scholarship based on achievement in academic excellence.

He then went on to serve as an intern at Yale’s affiliate, Waterbury Hospital. He later served a joint appointment as a resident at Massachusetts Eye & Ear Infirmary, and a clinical fellow in ophthalmology at Harvard Medical School. While at Massachusetts Eye & Ear, Dr. Phillip Gendelman began the St. Lucia project, starting a volunteer Mass. Eye & Ear eye service for the underserved population of St. Lucia, approximately 140,000 people.

Dr. Gendelman has been practicing since 1983 in Burlington and Woburn and served as Chief Medical Officer from 2007-2017. During this time, he also served as a consultant in ophthalmology for Massachusetts at Tewksbury State Hospital from 1986 until 2004 and had the opportunity to teach as an Assistant Clinical Professor of Medicine at the New England College of Optometry from 1988 to 1992. He has also been a member of the National Eye Care Program since July 1985. Dr. Gendelman has served as Chief of Winchester Hospital’s Department of Ophthalmology from January 2007 to 2017.

Gendelman was awarded the Governor’s Citation, in July 2009, for his dedicated service to the Middlesex County Community, on behalf of the citizens of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. He was selected as a top Ophthalmologist in Boston Magazine’s Top Doctors 2011 to present and awarded the Patient Choice Awards selected by Castle Connolly, and is included in their guide “America’s Top Doctors.”
