What Are Intraocular Lenses?
An intraocular lens (IOL), is a small, artificial lens for the eye in place of the natural lens. This is for patients who have undergone cataract surgery. The intraocular lens is used to replace the lens that became cloudy in order to improve your vision. Much like prescription eyeglasses or contacts, IOLs come in different focusing powers. Your ophthalmologist at Boston Vision will measure several different dimensions of your eye to set your IOLs focusing power.
What Are Intraocular Lenses Made of?
There are different types of intraocular lenses. Most of these are made with acrylic, silicone, or other plastic compositions. Intraocular lenses are also coated with a special material to protect the eyes from the sun’s rays. There are different types of IOLS. These are monofocal, multifocal, accommodative, and toric.
- Monofocal IOL: This is the most common type of lens used in cataract surgery. It has only one focal length and can focus for up close, medium-range, or far vision.
- Multifocal IOL: The lenses have different zones that are set at different powers. These provide both distance and near focus at the same time.
- Accommodative IOLS: These lenses may move while inside the eye. This allows for focusing at different distances. These lenses have proven to be less effective long term and are rarely used at this time.
- Toric IOLS: This lens is for people with astigmatism. The toric lens is designed to correct the football-shaped curve in the cornea.
