Spotlight on Spring: Clearing Seasonal Myths about Cataracts
Cataracts occur when the eye’s natural lens becomes cloudy. If you are experiencing common concerns associated with cataracts, our team at Boston Vision can help. Our mission is to provide you with clear, accurate information about cataracts and empower you to make informed decisions about your eye health. Read on to learn more about cataracts and cataract surgery.
What are Cataracts?
Common symptoms of cataracts include blurry vision, seeing double, being sensitive to light, having trouble seeing at night, and seeing bright colors as faded. If you notice any of these symptoms, it is important to seek medical advice from a skilled ophthalmologist.
What Causes Cataracts?
Our eyes have a natural lens that bends light rays that enter the eye, helping us to see. This lens should ideally be clear. Cataracts occur when the proteins in your eye’s natural lens break down, causing things to appear blurry, hazy, or less colorful.
Aging is the most common cause of cataracts due to natural eye changes that occur after the age of 40. Other causes may include a family history of cataracts, medical issues such as diabetes, eye injury, sun damage to the eyes, smoking, and certain medications such as corticosteroids.
What to Expect with Cataract Surgery
There are many different forms of cataract surgery that can be performed; the one that is right for you will be determined during a consultation with one of our cataract experts. However, in general, the eye’s cloudy lens is removed. Your surgeon will replace this lens with an artificial lens called an intraocular lens (IOL). Our team will discuss IOLs with you during your consultation and explain how they work.
